How many Missions/Countries do you serve?
In 2016 alone, the Salvatorian Mission Warehouse sent containers to 35 Missions in 12 countries around the world.
What kinds of items do you send to the Missions?
The most common items included in containers are food and clothing. Food items are oftentimes snack foods or candy, which is important for two reasons: these high calorie items are essential in areas where food is scarce, and giving treats to the children especially acts as a gateway of trust for other services to be offered (medical aid, education, etc.). The clothing sent is new and high quality/sturdy. Most recipients do their laundry against rocks in streams and the material needs to be able to stand up to the rough treatment.
How much does it cost to send a container of goods to each Mission?
The average cost to ship a container is $6000. A list of containers shipped in 2015 can be found here. It includes the destination country, date of departure, pounds of goods, and shipping cost (this is a port-to-port cost only...it does not reflect additional trucking fees, which average an additional $1000 per container).
If it costs an average of $6000 to ship a container, why not just send the money directly to the Missions?
The Missions could not purchase nearly the amount of goods for $6000 that we are able to send in a container. Additionally, goods are not available in the same way in Mission countries that they are in the U.S.--grocery stores with fully stocked shelves simply do not exist. Food and clothing is not available to purchase in the more rural areas where subsistence farming is the norm.
Do you accept donations of goods?
Yes, you are welcome to drop off goods between 8:30--4:00pm Monday through Friday. Keep in mind, however, that not all items are useful to the Missions. Goods that cannot be shipped are redistributed to our local partners.
What kind of items do you need?
Missions are in constant need of rice and corn meal. There is also a demand for liquid soap, shampoo, bar soap, and other personal hygiene items that we are unable to meet at this time. Please remember that we ship huge quantities so it is most helpful for us to partner with companies that can supply us in bulk.
Can I visit the warehouse?
Absolutely! The warehouse is generally open 8:30-4:00 Monday through Friday and we always welcome visitors. Volunteers work in AM/PM shifts all week and have created a great community if you would like to join them on a regular basis.
